Summary

Embraced by a cottage garden where roses ramble and wildlife thrives, you’ll find romantic Gwel-an-Dowr. A one-bedroom ground floor apartment in a beautifully converted mill, set beside ancient woodland and Polwheveral creek on the Helford River,

Polwheveral creek brings rural peace and quiet to your stay in Cornwall. Tucked away, far from the crowds, it offers a sanctuary to walkers, kayakers, and anyone wishing for a taste of the good life. Decorated in a French style, the interior offers comfortable surroundings where two people can relax in seclusion. Throw open the Juliette balcony in the dining area to tempt a breeze at breakfast, or take to the garden and sit out in the shade.

The established cottage garden offers a profusion of colour in the spring and summer months. The scent of flowers hanging in the air offers a delight for the senses as your holiday plays out to a soundtrack of birdsong and bumblebees. As evening rolls around and the daylight fades, be sure to look to the skies above – the lack of light pollution here offers stargazers an unspoilt and unbridled view of the night sky.

From Gwel-an-Dowr, a famously enchanting landscape waits to be explored. From the quaysides and beaches of the Helford River to the North Coast of Cornwall and beyond. Share the delights of Gwel-an-Dowr with friends and family, with a larger apartment upstairs, Melyn Goth, sleeping six. The two can be booked together to create a holiday retreat for up to eight people, (although please note the different changeover days).

Gwel-an-Dowr is nestled within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, beside a tranquil creek designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Throughout the day the creek gently fills with water. The landscape transforms with the ebb and flow of the tide, and the egrets that pace the shoreline make way for kingfishers to dart into the water, allowing guests flashes of brilliant blue among all the green.

Made famous by Daphne Du Maurier in her novel ‘Frenchman’s Creek’, the Helford has been preserved as an idyllic and unspoilt part of the country, due largely to the efforts of the National Trust and the passionate people living on its banks, who are keen to maintain this slow and peaceful way of life. As such, the Helford is a haven for wildlife and nature lovers, where walks through lanes and coastal paths reveal a habitat rich with life and ripe for exploration.

Gwel-an-Dowr is nestled down within the rural hamlet of Polwheveral, on the outskirts of the village of Constantine, near Falmouth in Cornwall. Within close distance are the pubs and shops of the village,
including the unique Constantine Stores with its array of drinks from across the world. Amble through the country lanes towards the award-winning Trengilly Wartha Inn, for a most hearty dinner.

Potager Gardens is also a short walk away. This organic greenhouse café is a favourite spot of many, and you can take time out sitting in the hammocks, playing badminton, or enjoying a relaxing lunch. Garden lovers delight in Trebah and Glendurgan gardens, a pair of subtropical gardens close to hand on the banks of the Helford River. Nearby the gardens is Grebe beach, a year-round dog-friendly spot that’s ideal for picnicking – and for enlivening wild swims in crystal-clear waters.

For a change of pace during your relaxing stay, the buzz of the historic harbour town of Falmouth lies just a short drive away. Here, great restaurants, bars and beaches abound. Falmouth is also home to renowned events such as the International Sea Shanty Festival in June, and in August, during Falmouth Week, the streets lined with independent bookshops, cinemas and cafés, are alive with energy and excitement.

What can I add to previous reviews, as delightful as it looks in images, great setting, albeit down narrow lanes, and very convenient for Trebah Gardens, the best. good interaction with the owner, and we had the place to ourselves, a shame more weeks are not booked here or in Melyn Goth above.
