Summary

A thatched boathouse turned picture-perfect holiday cottage, nestled between woodland and the golden stretch of your very own private beach. Holidays in Cornwall simply do not get better than this.

As you make your way to the shoreline through a woodland of ancient oaks, the glittering waters of the Helford River reveal themselves through gaps in the trees. With your luggage escorted by tractor and trailer, your holiday begins as soon as you catch the first glimpse of the thatched roof of Pedn Billy Boathouse. In one breathtaking moment, you’ll understand why visitors over the years and sailors passing by have described this cottage as magic.

The view from the boathouse is at once unchanged and ever-changing – the timeless beauty of the Helford River is one of Cornwall’s best-kept secrets. Over the course of your stay, you’ll notice something new with each glance to the windows. A different seabird on the wing, the changing direction of the wind on the surface of the glassy water, or the tide, nudging closer or retreating from the shore.

Due to popular demand, a priority booking system is in place at Pedn Billy Boathouse for much of the year. Cornish Holiday Cottages operate a waiting list for key holiday dates, so please do contact us to express your interest.

Location and Surrounding Area

The Helford River is a haven for wildlife, with its tree-lined creeks and coves. Exploring this area by kayak or boat is a lot of fun and will give you easier access to some truly idyllic spots for picnics and stone skimming.

If you prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground then the Ferry Boat Inn is just over half a mile away. The walk is predominantly across the sand but you will need a torch if you are returning home in the dark and the moon is not at its fullest. Please note that access across the beach is not possible for approximately two hours either side of high water. For current and future tide times please click here.

Mawnan Smith village is 40 minutes on foot, or a five-minute drive. Here you will find a cafe, thatched Pub, local post office and general stores.

The town of Falmouth, with the third deepest natural harbour in the world, is a haven for food, but you can just as easily entertain yourself sitting on one of the piers watching the world go by. Festivals take place throughout the year, with the sailing week in August and the Oyster Festival in October being particularly popular. Every Tuesday morning you will find a farmer’s market on the Piazza next to the library.

The rugged cliffs of The Lizard, the U.K’s most southerly point are 45 minutes by car. Kynance Cove and Porthcurnick Beach combined with a visit to the Minack, an open-air theatre, built into the cliffs high above the Atlantic ocean is a guaranteed memorable day out.

The North coast and the popular town of St Ives is a good place to escape if the weather is looking less favourable on the south side. Park at Lelant the Saltings and take a twenty-minute train ride along what is undoubtedly England’s most stunningly beautiful stretch of train and coastline.
