Summary

Rose Cottage 2, a traditional fisherman’s cottage nestled sweetly between sister cottages, Rose Cottages 1 and 3, is ideally positioned in the picturesque hamlet of Durgan in Cornwall. Together they share a peaceful central courtyard. From here the calm and gently lapping waves of the Helford River can be heard only moments away.

Rose Cottage 2 provides comfortable and straightforward accommodation that lets visitors enjoy one of the most unique locations that Cornwall has to offer. Traditionally laid out, a kitchen and separate living room make up the ground floor of the cottage. Upstairs, there is a double bedroom with windows over the courtyard, and a second bedroom with bunk beds for little ones, along with a family bathroom.

Rose Cottage 2 has access to the shared courtyard at the Rose Cottages, ideal for enjoying the sunshine or an al-fresco dinner in the evening, close enough to the sea to hear the sound of the waves lapping the shore. Or better still, pop your supper into a hamper and enjoy a picnic dinner on the beach.

Durgan feels timeless and is owned predominantly by the National Trust, helping it to retain its charm as quite possibly the most beautifully quaint beachside retreat in the UK. Brilliant for walkers of the South West Coast Path.

Location and Surrounding Area

With stone fisherman’s cottages, a red phone box and a slipway down to the clear waters of the Helford River, Durgan could quite possibly be the prettiest hamlet in Cornwall – and even, we would argue, in the country. Just seventeen houses exist within the hamlet, sharing a spot on the riverbank with cormorants and herons and other wildlife that relish this quieter way of life.

Stroll along the coastal path to the Ferryboat Inn at Helford Passage for an evening meal, enjoying the evening sun from the terrace (although don’t forget your torch for the journey back!). From Helford Passage you can catch a ferry over to the idyllic village of Helford, where the Shipwrights Arms welcomes hungry travellers with open arms and full plates. On this side of the Helford you’ll find Frenchman’s Creek, famous to readers of Daphne Du Maurier, who spent time here in the Helford and found inspiration in its crystalline waters and ancient woodlands.

Spend an afternoon in wonder at the subtropical Glendurgan Garden, where you’ll find paths winding through a stunning array of rare plant life, plus a laurel maze to journey into (and try and find your way out of!). Nearby Trebah Garden offers more alluring botanical beauty, plus it has a great year-round café and restaurant, and a calendar of events held in its outdoor amphitheatre to keep you entertained throughout summer.

Beaches and having fun on the water are what the Helford is all about, and you’ll find many year-round dog-friendly beaches lining the waterside only a coastal walk away. Like Grebe, just a short stroll from Durgan. Spend an afternoon lounging at this beautiful beach surrounded by Sessile oaks and Scots pine and with the clearest of waters to dive into. Or take to the water from Helford Passage by renting a boat, or book ahead and make use of the rowing boat at Rose Cottages for an even more poetic way of seeing the river.

When the time comes for a change of pace, head over and soak up the atmosphere in Falmouth, just a brief drive away. This bustling harbour town has a thriving cultural scene, with people travelling from all over Europe for events like the International Sea Shanty Festival, which takes place in June. Known for its arts scene as well as great food, there’s always plenty to do in town – from browsing through galleries and independent shops to enjoying a ferry trip out into the harbour, for a unique view of the coastline from the water.

Perfect location and well equipped cottage with all you could need. Only suggestion is that it desperately needs a replacement sofa and arm chairs. The current ones were old, damp and smelly! I was glad the weather was so kind that we didn’t really need to use them. Would also prefer if bathroom towels were provided given the price.
