Star and Garter

The ancient pub Star & Garter sits smartly on the Old High Street in Falmouth and inside expansive panoramic windows wrap around the back wall to reveal an incredible vista across the historic harbour.

Prior to the arrival of current owners Elliot and Becca Thompson, this historical pub was rundown and in need of some care and consideration. Now after a refurb and a few years of dedicated cooking, it’s a handsome and much-loved fixture with interior touches of turquoise and fine art hangings.

Locally-caught seafood is always a signature menu dish, as is Cornwall-reared meats and hyper-seasonal specials. Expect items such as chargrilled market fish, aged Moor and Hanger steak and coal-roasted rainbow roots. If you’re in the mood to celebrate with a cocktail you won’t be disappointed in their carefully curated list of choices, which change with the seasons and include tipples such as sorbet bellinis, Knightor negronis and chocolate orange espresso martinis.

Arguably one of the best places in Falmouth for a Sunday roast, it is a carnivore’s cornucopia with pork shoulder and moorland rump both served with duck fat roasties, horseradish and thyme Yorkshire puddings, roast cauliflower cheese and swede mash.

The team prepares everything in house and their vast skill set includes butchery, smoking, curing and cooking over hot coals.

Comfortable and luxurious booths line the window, there is something extra special about dining on moreish dishes while glimpsing glorious yachts sail in the distance and paddle boarders glide past on the silky smooth water.

“We were lucky enough to come here for a Christmas work dinner and the roast was simply delicious. I really hope to eat here more as you can’t get much better than a pub roast, by the fire with water views over Falmouth.”
