Port navas regatta - helford river - cornwall - 260714Growing up in the Helford River area I always attended Port Navas Regatta as a child, but I had not been for several years, as generally on a Saturday I am very busy; such is the life for someone who works in the holiday trade. This year I was determined to get back there and I was delighted to find that nothing had really changed.

This wonderful regatta is about family and neighbours, it is about appreciating the beautiful setting of Port Navas creek and about having fun in the most charming way. Bunting and vintage flags adorn the houses and boats on the creek. Children and adults line the banks of the quay, crabbing and cheering the participants of the Father & Son rowing race on. Dogs mingle about hoping for the odd crust to drop. The heat is challenging but there’s plenty of ice-cream and cool drinks to thirst your quench. Friends, old and new, sit chatting, enjoying a Cornish cream tea. Mrs Green of Calamansac looks slightly embarrassed about her impressive haul won on the Tombola stall. I have no such luck, but I leave with a big smile on my face, that not everything changes, particularly those things that were perfect then and now.
