Summary

A secretly spacious country idyll nestled among woodland in the upper reaches of the Helford River, Nancenoy Cottage sits within easy reach of the very best of Cornwall.

In bygone days, this peaceful family retreat stood as a row of three traditional workers cottages. Its owners then lovingly restored and evolved the space into a single, generously proportioned home with a beautiful interior. And, of course, with all the charm and character of its chocolate box cottage origins retained.

Country life centres around the kitchen and a unique layout here ensures a holiday home with a heart. Plot coastal adventures over breakfast with your map opened wide on the kitchen table, or keep the chef company while dinner is conjured from local fare handpicked from the farm shops nearby.

Children will revel in the novelty of having their own staircase – there are three to retreat up towards the four bedrooms, while evening gatherings will find you drawn to the peace of the garden and the late gaze of the sun.

Rally the troops and the family dog and venture across hilltops, woodland and farmland towards the alluring beauty of Scott’s Quay. Here the Helford River can be admired in all her glory. So stay a while with a picnic and swim in glorious waters. Then sit back and watch how nature flows and plays, as the sun sets slowly behind you.

Nancenoy Cottage is a holiday home for all seasons, and when the woods gleam an autumnal tone, the area takes on a new form of magic. In winter, come and curl up close and get toasty together by the woodburner. Then take to the country lanes – woolly hats, wellies, and scarves at the ready – to arrive at the award-winning Trengilly Wartha Inn, ready for some well-deserved food, ales and wine.

Along the lane and over an enchanting humpback bridge is the head of Polwheveral Creek, where at high tide visions of ‘Swallows and Amazons’ will form as you watch the wildlife that makes home on the river. A slow amble up a steep lane, across rolling fields and through woodland will see you out to Scott’s Quay.

Three-hundred yards from home is the ever-popular Trengilly Wartha Inn, for filling food and drink guaranteed to be served with a winning Cornish welcome. Just fifteen minutes from home by foot and you’ll find yourself at Potager Garden, an organic café and workshop venue where you can relax in one of the hammocks, play ping-pong or badminton, or explore wild and wonderful flora in the heavenly garden.

The culture and the culinary creativity of the harbourside town of Falmouth is only a short hop away – just twenty minutes by car. This diverse and characterful town steeped in maritime history hosts Cornwall’s best independent shops, cafés and restaurants. And you can easily explore the local landscape further from the water. Catch a ferry across to the beautiful Roseland Peninsula, or meander instead along the Fal and Helford rivers to discover creeks and coves and crystal-clear waters.

Beside Nancenoy Cottage sits Nancenoy Farmhouse. When booked together, a gate can be unlocked to join the two gardens. Combined, the properties sleep up to fifteen and provide a sprawling country haven for two or more families. On its own, however, Nancenoy Cottage pleasures in its privacy and you’ll sense only the slightest of impact from neighbours.
