Hidden amidst the sprawling gardens and orchards of a country estate, this former coach house has been reimagined into a stunning contemporary holiday home, from where rambling walks through rolling pasture carry you towards the gleaming shorelines of the Helford River. As you pass the gatehouse and make your way down the treelined driveway towards the Trerose Estate, and as The Coach House reveals itself through trees, it’s difficult not to feel as though you’re on the cusp of a real adventure.

Enchanting since the moment it was built from local stone in 1904, recent renovations have transformed The Coach House into a place for people to congregate and revel in their surroundings. Contemporary details such as floor-to-ceiling bifold doors in the kitchen bring light and nature into the property, while upstairs the three bedrooms offer warming spaces to retire to seeped in comfort and character. Keep windows ajar as you rest, and be serenaded by the drifting lilt of birdsong over the trees.

Ten acres of lush manor gardens encompass you and the grounds allow you to travel the world through a collection of rare and unusual flora. Children and grown-ups will relish the opportunity to live like lords and ladies of the manor, exploring the ins and outs of this unique estate.

The coastline of the Helford River is within easy reach, with year-round dog-friendly beaches and winding walks for all to enjoy. Much of the land close by is maintained under the watchful eye of the National Trust, allowing the Helford to remain one of the most alluring and unspoilt corners of Cornwall.

A short walk from the cottage brings you to where rolling meadows and ancient woods meet the sea at Porthallack Cove. On a starlit night, as the tide reaches its highest point, it is not uncommon for the water to shimmer along the shoreline with phosphorescence – an experience like no other that will stay with you long after you return home.

The kitchen is generously equipped with two under counter fridges, two ovens and a grill, a four ring electric hob, a BOSE radio/cd player and a dishwasher. One step down, leading to the utility room.

with sink, granite worktop, slate floor, larder freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer. Plenty of room for hanging wetsuits, wellies etc. Door to patio and garden.

Garden

Guests are free to roam in most of the ten acres, but there is also a substantial lawn area adjacent to the cottage for guests sole use. The garden immediately surrounding the house is for the owners only. Bob the friendly estate manager will show you around on arrival.

A dream for garden and nature lovers, the unique grounds at The Coach House are complemented by its proximity to the gardens of Trebah and Glendurgan, a pair of subtropical paradises ideal for not only the horticulturalists among us to explore and enjoy.

Walks to year-round dog-friendly beaches at Grebe and Porthallack are just at the end of the garden, and adventure can be found at every turn within the beautiful Carlidnack woods, which is stunningly carpeted in bluebells in spring. Dogs will simply love nearby Bosveal Meadow, too, and so will you, as it rises above the water and offers commanding views out to sea.

Walk the coastal path towards the waterside hamlet of Durgan, with its seasonal ice cream parlour. From here you can meander through woodlands to Glendurgan Garden. The South West Coast Path here undulates into little coves and beaches – perfect for cooling off with a refreshing dip in the sea. The waters of the Helford River are listed grade-A, and swimming here is a truly revitalising experience.

Your closest village, Mawnan Smith, has a few shops, a café, a restaurant, and a traditional thatched inn. Just a short drive away is Falmouth, renowned for great food and drink, along with cultural highlights such as the International Sea Shanty Festival, the Fal Oyster Festival, and a number of art galleries and music venues.

If the thrill of being on the water draws you to Cornwall, then self-drive boats – ideal for exploring all the creeks and quays of the river – can be hired from Helford Passage. For boat journeys with a captain, passenger ferries departing from Falmouth take you across the River Fal to St Mawes and the Roseland Peninsula, or up river to Truro.

Plumbing system is quite erratic leaving home cold when warmth required and hot when it should have turned off already

Number of guests: should two families want to share The Coach House, then there is a pull out double bed in the upstairs dressing area. If the extra two children do not want to share a bed, then there is a sofa bed in the study area on the ground floor.

A stairgate is fitted at the bottom of the stairs to prevent access to dogs and mobile toddlers.
