Particulars
Location and Surrounding Area
Primrose Cottage sits on the outskirts of Mawnan Smith, a pretty village on the edge of the Helford River and within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With a thatched inn, a restaurant, quaint shops and a café, all the essentials are within easy reach.
The Helford River lies one mile from the cottage, and here wildlife thrives in the crystal-clear, grade-A waters that fill the ria, or ancient river valley. Aged woodland rises from each side of the river, shielding walkers and sun bathers and creating a waterside experience that feels plucked from the pages of an Arthur Ransome novel, and where the fun and mischief of the characters of Swallows and Amazons can play out on the surface of the water.
Footpaths and public rights of way criss-cross the landscape here, and a walk along hedgerows and through pasturelands will guide you out to the ocean or the river. A woodland walk to Maenporth beach is a must during your visit, as are trips to Trebah or Glendurgan – two subtropical gardens that delight the senses and showcase the temperate climate of this part of Cornwall.
The bustling town of Falmouth, a hive of maritime activity in summer, is a short drive away. Its array of
independent coffee shops and restaurants and bars is renowned, and its reputation as a culinary hotspot
continues to grow. From the harbourside in town ferries wait to take you all along the river, to St Mawes, or to Truro.
Mawnan Smith is well poised for exploring further afield, with the North Coast of Cornwall just over a half hour’s drive away. Reach St Ives in forty-five minutes and explore the Tate, or take to the clifftops and
walk along the dramatic scenery of the North Coast, following the sea as the land undulates and opens to
vistas with dramatic crashing waves.
