Children's Parks in Cornwall

As all parents of young children will know, a well stocked park is always a draw, and there are plenty of them in the area. Anyone who is heading West on a day out to either Penzance, Porthleven, St Ives or the Lizard will find themselves heading through and past the town of Helston, and it can be an excellent stop off point if the kids are in tow. If you happen to be staying in a Helford holiday cottage or a property in Mawnan Smith then you are well placed to head out in this direction. In Helston you will find an excellent kids park with a delightful lake where you can hire pedaloís, and there is even a recently built skate park for those of you with slightly more adventurous children!

Closer to home you will find some lovely little parks that will keep your children entertained for hours. In Penryn, you will come across all manner of swings, slides and climbing frames in the Trelawney park play area which has recently been reopened with some fabulous play equipment for children of all ages. Falmouth also has the delightful if slightly more old fashioned Kimberley Park. There is a little less in the way of playground equipment on show, but it is a delightful setting for a family picnic. The nearby village of Flushing has a delightful contained play park at what is known as the Bowling Green, at the top of the village. Your children will be more than happy to entertain themselves on all of the great apparatus, whilst you relax and take in the incredible elevated views of Falmouth across the water.

Crabbing on the creeks

With the Helford River and the Carrick Roads on your doorstep there is always a tidal creek to visit where all manner of fun can be had with a bit of twine and some bacon! Thatís right, it might seem a bit Swallows and Amazon, but going crabbing with the kids can be as much fun for the parents as it is for the children! To do it properly, you will need to get hold of some bacon, and of course a crabbing line, and you can find these at Sarah's Shop which is just next to the Ferryboat inn, on the Helford. The Helford itself is a great location for crabbing, but you will find plenty of spots throughout the Helford River and the Carrick Roads.

Take a tour of the Lifeboat Station!

As you would imagine, the seas around Falmouth are a buzz of activity for a large part of the year, and the Falmouth Lifeboat crew is no doubt kept busy. Thankfully they are keen to keep people interested in just what it is that they do, which means that they open their doors to the public so that people can learn more about the great service they offer. Visits normally involve a good look around all the inshore lifeboat, and the Severn class all-weather lifeboat, which can include an opportunity for enthusiastic children to get behind the wheel of one of these mighty boats, albeit on dry land! Itís a great opportunity for the kids to have a really fun day out, and it is also a great opportunity to raise awareness not just of the importance of safety on the water to children, but also to the excellent work carried out by the RNLI
