 The Team

With the right place to stay, holidays are made. The day starts on your doorstep and you feel like anything is possible. It’s something Ruth Austen knew when she set up this business in 1978 and something we swear by today.

Emily

Helping you find the perfect holiday cottage since: Pretty much since birth, (1978)!

My Favourite Beach: Gyllyngvase is my closest beach and where I pop for a quick dip all year round. Above all though Bream Cove is my go to happy place. I have walked that bit of coast a million times I reckon, and the beauty still takes my breath away.

Best spot to enjoy a meal: You can’t beat an al fresco lunch at The Hidden Hut on Porthcurnick Beach or sometimes we cook our supper, put it in a tiffin and head down to Kiln Quay at Flushing for the last sun of the day – the kids splash about in the water and I relax with a glass of red. Bliss.

When I am not at work you will find me: Walking the coast path with my family and dogs, practicing yoga, off on a dawn paddle, or drinking a (decaf) oat, flat white with friends in one of Falmouth’s great coffee shops.

My Favourite Beach: So many to choose from but I think it has to be Grebe. It’s a beautiful place to swim, the Helford River is such a tranquil haven for nature.

Best spot to enjoy a meal: The Star and Garter, Falmouth has to be my favourite go-to place for a special treat. I love the delicious food and stunning waterside views. Mind you, you can’t beat traditional fish and chips from Harbour Lights.

When I am not at work you will find me: Sailing with my family- we try to spend as much time out on the water as possible. We’re so lucky to have such beautiful sailing waters, like the Carrick Roads and Helford River, right on our doorstep.

My Favourite Beach: Gwithian – I love the fact that even in the height of summer the beach is so large that you can find a private spot. The sand is soft and fine which is wonderful when swimming in the sea.

Best spot to enjoy a meal: We are so fortunate in Falmouth with some wonderful eateries. Living in Mylor we love to combine a walk with a meal so the Pandora Inn and Castaways are regulars on our list.

When I am not at work you will find me: Walking our wonderful Cornish footpaths, this varies from our sheltered paths around the rivers and estuaries of our Falmouth coastline to the dramatic cliff tops on the North Coast.

My favourite beach: One of my favourites is Lelant beach, tucked away behind the village. I love to walk along the stretch of golden sand or find a sheltered spot for a beach BBQ.

Best spot to enjoy a meal: I think it has to be Bango’s Kitchen in Penryn, their Bao Buns are the best I’ve tried and the cuisine is unique to this part of Cornwall.

Where you can find me outside of work: Catching up with friends over a G&T or (when I get the chance) going to music and food festivals.

My favourite beach: I love the coastal walk from Falmouth to Maenporth, especially in the summer when the pathway is almost overgrown in gorgeous shrubbery. Some of my favourite days have been spent in the turquoise waters of Maenporth beach, cooling down in the ocean after the morning hike there.

Best spot to enjoy a meal: I would happily dine out for every meal of the day in the local area as there are so many wonderful eateries to choose from, but for dinner, I would get dressed up and dine in Restaurant Mine for their small plates and cosy setting.

When I am not at work you will find me: Walking the coastal path, visiting Cornish villages and drawing the local landscapes, people and plants. And after a day rambling and sketching, in a Falmouth pub beside the fire or sea-view window with a pint, or mug of something steaming.

My favourite beach: Bar Beach; down past Helford Passage, just before Port Navas Creek. You can catch the sun here all afternoon until it sets. Once the tide comes in, you can hide in the shade of the overhanging trees or sit out on the rocks in the sun, then cool down in the peaceful Helford River, swimming all the way across to Pedn Billy Boathouse if you want to! I love to hop over to Helford Passage after work for a refreshing swim, our Office is just a stone’s throw away.

Best spot to enjoy a meal: The Bank Canteen, a not-for-profit project born from The Cornish Bank, serves delicious, local, sustainable hearty food and gives back to the community too. Nothing beats the view of the Fal River and harbour while eating in the cosy art-filled space.

When I am not at work you will find me: Swimming in the Sea! Dragging my friends out for a coastal walk or across the county to explore somewhere new with our cameras – often ending in more sea swimming.

Best spot to enjoy a meal: I started life on the streets of Malaga, so my roots mean I am very partial to any kind of scraps I can find, with pasty crumbs being my fave.

My Favourite Beach: Porth Sawsen. We walk down through the valley and woodland next to Carwinion in Mawnan Smith and end up on the beach for stone skimming.

Marvin

Best spot to enjoy a meal: Tucked under a table on the pontoon at the Pandora Inn. If I’m very well behaved, I’m told I might get a treat from the bar (it hasn’t happened yet but I’m always very hopeful).
When I am not at work you will find me: My role at CHC is very demanding, and involves such vital duties as lying down, eating treats, and playing with my best friend Mingo. In that sense, the work never ends… it really is a dog’s life.
Falmouth and Helford River

An area close to our hearts

The crunch of leaves on the Maenporth coastpath. The phosphorescent glow in creeks Du Maurier called her own. The rave-reviewed eateries on the Old High Street. The scent of Penjerrick woods after the rain.

Falmouth and Helford River constantly seduce and surprise, with no two moments the same. It’s why we love our little corner of the world and why we know you will too.
